Gather ingredients for cake batter.
Prepare cake batter as instructed on box or by recipe.
Bake cake as instructed. It does not matter what shape or size pan you use as you will crumble the final product. However, adjust cooking time accordingly.
Allow the cake to cool completely. If you skip this step, the cake will melt the icing, causing a gigantic mess!!!
Gather the remaining ingredients to prepare the cake balls.
Crumble the cake into small pieces. The smaller the crumbles, the smoother your cake balls will turn out!
Place all of the crumbled cake into a large mixing bowl.
Add the cream cheese frosting to the crumbles in the bowl.
Mix until all the frosting is completely incorporated.
Line a couple of cutting boards with foil if desired (easier clean up) as you will use these on which to first form, then freeze, then dip the cake balls.
Roll the cake balls between your hands into balls about the diameter of a quarter. As the balls get too sticky, wash and dry your hands and begin again.
Cover with plastic wrap and freeze for 1-2 hours to make the balls more firm before dipping them in chocolate.
Place the chocolate chips in a microwave proof bowl and microwave on 50% power for 3-4 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds.
The chocolate chips should be heated until they stir "smooth" as in the photo above, but be careful not to overheat the chocolate as it will taste grainy and bitter.
Finally, dip the cake balls into the chocolate, using either two fingers to grip the balls or using two spoons to shift the balls back and forth and discard excess chocolate.
This is the finished product!!! Allow the chocolate to completely harden and enjoy!!!
